Experience Iceland’s enchanting landscapes and its hidden inhabitants—the elves, also known as the “hidden people.” On this riding tour, we visit places said to be home to these mystical creatures, though they remain invisible to the human eye.
Depending on where the horses last felt their presence, you will ride along one of two paths.
We will either pass the small cleft Alfakví and the old sheep’s house that, according to legend, cannot be moved without facing serious consequences. Skjólklettur is another stop on this route, where elves are said to have a church, and some claim to have heard their singing. As we make our way to the elfin hill Einbúi, home to friendly and sometimes singing elves, you’ll also enjoy the smooth, ambling gait of the Icelandic horse, known as the “tölt,” along excellent riding trails.
Alternatively, we may ride through hummock meadows and lava fields believed to be inhabited by elves. Pay attention to your horse’s behavior—if it reacts while passing by, an elf might be nearby. You’ll also cross the small warm river Varmá, where you may encounter the Icelandic water spirit, Nykur.
