Glacier Hike on Sólheimajökull pick-up 8.00 AM/11 hrs (G04)

11 hours Fr. £ 199

Experience Sólheimajökull on a guided glacier hike with an expert guide. Walk across ice, volcanic ash and dramatic crevasses while learning about the glacier’s history on a unique Icelandic adventure.

Join the Glacier Experience and explore the mighty Sólheimajökull glacier up close. The tour begins with an introduction to the glacier equipment included and important safety instructions, ensuring you feel confident before the adventure starts. An experienced glacier guide will accompany you throughout the tour, ready to guide you and answer any questions along the way.

The adventure starts with a short but atmospheric walk across pitch-black volcanic ash and sand – a dramatic landscape shaped by the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010. Here, the powerful interaction between fire and ice in Iceland becomes clear even before you reach the glacier’s edge.

Sólheimajökull is a glacier tongue extending from Mýrdalsjökull, famously known as the home of the powerful Katla volcano. The area is as wild as it is beautiful. Your guide will share insights into the glacier’s history, geology, and how it is slowly changing due to the climate. At the glacier’s edge, you will put on crampons and step into an almost unreal world of ancient ice.

During the hike, you will witness how natural forces shape spectacular formations: sharp ice ridges, deep crevasses, and impressive sinkholes known as moulins, where meltwater rushes down through the glacier. You may also spot traces of past volcanic eruptions in layers of ash that tell stories from both recent and distant history.

The hiking portion lasts approximately two hours, with 1–1.5 hours spent on the glacier itself. This is a unique and memorable adventure that offers a deeper understanding of Iceland’s dramatic nature—and a rare opportunity to experience a living glacier while it is still possible.

If you select the Reykjavík pick-up option; On our way to or back from the glacier, we stop at a few of Iceland's most magnificent natural attractions: Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach and the waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.
