Snorkeling in Silfra

Snorkelling in Silfra

It’s not every day you get the chance to swim between two continental plates, but on this trip, that is exactly what’s on offer. The World Heritage Þingvellir National Park is home to the water-filled Silfra Fissure, where crystal clear glacial water offers a magical snorkelling experience between the Eurasian and North American continental plates. From above, the Silfra Fissure looks like any other body of water, but under the surface you can discover strange rock formations on both sides, with many sections bearing rather descriptive names (how about swimming past the Silfra Cathedral, for example?). A knowledgeable guide will make sure you get a warm dry suit that will protect you against the cold water, and they will also give you a thorough run-through on how to dive before you hop in. If you have a waterproof camera then we recommend that you take it along – photo opportunities like this don’t come along all that often!

In order to participate on this excursion, you need to read through the snorkeling handbook below. The handbook contains some useful tips and information, and also lists medical requirements that you need to meet in order to go on the excursion.

Landmannalaugur and Hekla by Super Jeep

We leave Reykjavík and drive east, through the lush farmland of Southern Iceland. The snow-clad top of Hekla, 1491 meters above sea level and Iceland’s most famous volcano, will appear as we drive. Hekla was thought to be the entrance to hell in the middle ages.

The rich vegetation and the lave surroundings create a spectacular and colourful frame for the volcano. Hekla has had outbursts approximately 20 times since Iceland was formed, and we drive up close to the ridge of the lava created by the latest outbreak in 2000. Weather permitting we also drive along the edge of the volcano at around 900 meters for a breathtaking view.

From the base of the volcano we drive along a rough mountain road, over lava fields and past craters. We travel on into Landmannalaugar, where our specially built super jeep takes us over little streams and rivers with ease. We also stop and take a relaxing dip in a warm spring/stream, or for those who don’t want to bath a short stroll in the beautiful surroundings is just as nice.

Leaving the highlands, we visit the explosion crater Ljótipollur, before we drive into the beautiful valley Thjórsárdalur. There is a break for coffee at the mountain hotel Hrauneyjar before we visit the waterfall Hjálparfoss. From there we return to Reykjavík.

Puffin Express

This tour is for you who wants to get a closer look at the famous puffin birds. We sail out from the old harbour in Reykjavik and it only takes us about 15 minutes to reach the puffin island, Akurey. On the journey out you will be able to view Reykjavik from the seaside [remember your camera] and the guide will also share information about the buildings & islands that can be spotted along the way. The islands we visit are covered with small hills and slopes and both are well known for their colorful birdlife. The island’s shores are rocky but our boat Old Skuli is specially designed to take us as close to the islands as possible due to its shallow draft. When we arrive to the islands we turn off the engine so our passengers can observe the birds and the beautiful surroundings. Our expert guide will tell you all the facts and fun stories about the cute puffins and other wildlife that might be seen on the tour.

The Northern Lights Tour

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are a spectacular multi –coloured natural phenomenon that often dances across the Arctic sky.  On this trip we leave the lights of the city behind to go into the countryside to hunt for the Northern Lights. The destination for the trip varies according to weather conditions and the most favourable conditions for seeing the lights. Northern lights are caused by particles from the sun being flung out into the space, so called solar winds and clouds. These clouds assemble near the poles and when these clouds of electromagnetic particles collide with the gasses in the Earths atmosphere, the mystical lights of the Aurora Borealis are created. Particular weather conditions lend themselves to spotting Northern Lights more easily, usually on very clear, calm and cold evenings. The excursion will not run if the weather does not permit.

Whale Watching

Welcome aboard on one of the largest and fastest Whale Watching passenger boats in Iceland. The boats offer great comfort, a fantastic interior, large outside viewing decks and a safe family environment. The friendly guides, along with the captain and crew, point out where to spot the whales and give interesting information about the different kinds of whales and seabirds you can expect to see. The whales that we can spot on our tours on Faxaflói Bay are mainly 4 types – Minke Whales, White-Beaked Dolphins, Harbour Porpoises and Humpback Whales. We follow IceWhale’s code of conduct for responsible whale watching as we have great respect for the wildlife in the bay.
