Description day by day

Arrival and the Vellir farm

Participants arriving at Keflavik Airport should take the Flybus to BSÍ Bus Terminal (the final bus station in Reykjavík). Representatives from Eldhestar will greet you outside the bus terminal between 17:30 and 18:00 and arrange further transportation to our farm Vellir, near the village of Hveragerði. At the farm you will be lodged at Eldhestar Guesthouse. After dinner, Eldhestar will provide details about the next few days.

Day 1

Meadows, mountains, soft river beds and Northern Lights

After breakfast we set out to explore meadows and mountains. We ride over soft meadows, follow the old route towards Mt. Ingólfsfjall, named after the first Norwegian Viking who settled in Iceland, and finish the tour along Mt. Reykjafjall. Back at our farm Vellir, we enjoy a light lunch. After lunch we ride along soft river banks, following the Glúfurá River to The Old Cemetery and continue down to Ölfusá River Bank. From there, we have a view of the river and, weather permitting, the volcano Mt. Hekla. After we stop off at the swimming pool in Hveragerði we’ll return to the hotel where dinner will be served! We will check the northern lights forecast and get some useful information about the Northern Lights. If the forecast is favourable, and the sky is clear, we look for the lights at the farm or go on a hunt!

Day 2

Horses and whales

After breakfast we will ride over lava fields and enjoy the nice bridle paths surrounding Hveragerði’s stable area continuing along Mt. Reykjafjall. On our way home we will pass a geothermal area, which expanded dramatically during the big South Iceland earthquake in 2008. We enjoy a light lunch at the farm, and afterwards you will be driven to Reykjavik for whale watching. Hopefully you will be meeting two big beautiful creatures on the same day: the horse and the whale. Back at the hotel, dinner will be served. We will check the Northern Lights forecast and have a chance to watch a spectacular movie about this phenomenon.

Day 3

Meadows and lava fields

We saddle up after breakfast. The tour today goes through both meadows and lava fields. On our way, we pass several farms which give us an idea of how agriculture has developed in recent decades. After the ride we have a light lunch before hiking into the magnificent valley of Reykjadalur. In Reykjadalur we will experience hot springs and also bathe in a relaxing warm stream. This is a unique opportunity to experience Icelandic wilderness in all its variety. The tour ends with some refreshments at Eldhestar’s Riding Centre. After soaking in the hot tubs, dinner will be served.

Day 4

Riding and the Blue Lagoon

We head out after breakfast. The ride today is dependent on the weather, and the best alternative that da . Depending on the weather and wind, we will ride for 1.5-2 hours through the surroundings of our farm. After the ride we will have a light lunch and then drive you to the coach taking you to the Blue Lagoon. In the Blue Lagoon you can relax in the soothing geothermal waters. Upon your return to the farm, dinner will be served.

Day 5

Midwinter warmth, Gullfoss, Geysir and Thingvellir

The final day features midwinter warmth. Let a cuddly Icelandic horse heat your body and soul. After one hour on horseback, we will stretch out in the big warm hotpot in Hveragerði‘s famous swimming pool and experience the geothermal steam sauna. On this last riding tour, you will be riding your favourite horse! The final part of the program will be a sightseeing tour to famous Gulfoss Waterfall and the hot springs in the Geysir area as well as the National Park at Thingvellir. A transfer will then take you to your hotel/guesthouse in Reykjavík. You will be back in Reykjavík around 18:00.

Notice: Included in the price are meals and services as described in the itineraries.

Day 6

Return home
