Bathing in the Blue Lagoon

Bathing in the Blue Lagoon

The lagoon is like an oasis in the middle of the rugged lava landscape on the way from the airport to Reykjavík. The transfer takes approximately 20 minutes.

The Blue Lagoon is and outdoor bathing facility and it’s water comes straight from geothermic springs as deep as 2000 meters below the Earth’s surface, is rich in minerals and famous for its healing properties. It is naturally heated all year round to a comfortable temperature of 36-39° Celsius. An indoor lagoon and a geothermic sauna are also available.

After breakfast you will be picked up from your hotel for your superjeep excursion to the Golden Circle, where you explore some of Iceland’s most fascinating and well-known natural phenomena. After a stop for lunch, our journey continues to Gullfoss, ”the golden waterfall”. The powerful gushing water over several lava formed stages is a spectacular sight. From Gullfoss we head towards the Icelandic Highlands, where a snowmobile trip is a possible option (included for those who have chosen the package with snowmobiling).

After a day filled with adventure, the drive then takes you through a village nicknamed the ”village of greenhouses ”, Hveragerdi, where most of Iceland’s vegetables are grown in naturally heated green houses. Iceland in a Nutshell by Super Jeep

We leave Reykjavik behind in our jeep and head for the UNESCO world heritage site Thingvellir, where the world’s first parliament met and the continental plates of Europe and North America meet. From there we follow one of Iceland’s highest mountain roads called Kaldidalur (the cold valley) to reach the glacier Langjökull, where we can walk on the ice. Our next stop is the historical lave cave Surtshellir, which in the past used to house the outlaws of Iceland. From there we drive to the waterfall Hraunfossar, which falls into a lake in the green lava field below. The drive continues onto the most powerful geothermic spring in Europe, historically important for Reykjavík and Deildartunguhve, and on our way back to Reykjavík we drive by the beautiful fjord of Hvalfjördur, where the contrasting scenery is amazing.

This day trip is not called ”Iceland in a nutshell” without reason, as it encapsulates the contrasting scenery of Iceland in one trip. In the winter variations may be possible, like walking on the glacier Langjökull to a little village called Borgarnes and then through the underground tunnel in Hvalfjördur in stead of driving through Kaldidalur and Thingvellir.

Landmannalaugur and Hekla by Super Jeep

We leave Reykjavík and drive east, through the lush farmland of Southern Iceland. The snow-clad top of Hekla, 1491 meters above sea level and Iceland’s most famous volcano, will appear as we drive. Hekla was thought to be the entrance to hell in the middle ages.

The rich vegetation and the lave surroundings create a spectacular and colourful frame for the volcano. Hekla has had outbursts approximately 20 times since Iceland was formed, and we drive up close to the ridge of the lava created by the latest outbreak in 2000. Weather permitting we also drive along the edge of the volcano at around 900 meters for a breathtaking view.

From the base of the volcano we drive along a rough mountain road, over lava fields and past craters. We travel on into Landmannalaugar, where our specially built super jeep takes us over little streams and rivers with ease. We also stop and take a relaxing dip in a warm spring/stream, or for those who don’t want to bath a short stroll in the beautiful surroundings is just as nice.

Leaving the highlands, we visit the explosion crater Ljótipollur, before we drive into the beautiful valley Thjórsárdalur. There is a break for coffee at the mountain hotel Hrauneyjar before we visit the waterfall Hjálparfoss. From there we return to Reykjavík.

The Northern Lights Tour

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, are a spectacular multi –coloured natural phenomenon that often dances across the Arctic sky.  On this trip we leave the lights of the city behind to go into the countryside to hunt for the Northern Lights. The destination for the trip varies according to weather conditions and the most favourable conditions for seeing the lights. Northern lights are caused by particles from the sun being flung out into the space, so called solar winds and clouds. These clouds assemble near the poles and when these clouds of electromagnetic particles collide with the gasses in the Earths atmosphere, the mystical lights of the Aurora Borealis are created. Particular weather conditions lend themselves to spotting Northern Lights more easily, usually on very clear, calm and cold evenings. The excursion will not run if the weather does not permit.
