Arrival to Iceland

Arrival transfer from Keflavik airport to Centerhotel Plaza, which is located in the heart of the old city centre of Reykjavik. Despite its location and the city lights, Northern Lights can often been seen there. The hotel offers a wake-up service if the Northern Lights appear.

Day 1

  • Reykjavík

The Golden Circle

We tour the renowned Golden Circle including a visit to the famous Geysir hot spring area, where Strokkur erupts every 5-10 minutes. We also visit the Gullfoss waterfall and Thingvellir national park, where the forces of the Great Atlantic Rift are clearly visible. This is where the North American and European tectonic plates drift apart at a rate of 2-6 cm per year. Thingvellir is also the place where the ancient Icelandic parliament was established in 930. It is an area of truly outstanding beauty as well as geological and historical significance.

After visiting these world famous sights and a visit to local horse stable and a greenhouse, we drive through the landscapes of South Iceland to our accommodation in the country, Hotel Katla near the town of Vík, where we will stay for two nights.

Day 2

  • Strokkur
  • Gullfoss waterfall
  • Thingvellir National Park

The Glacier lagoon

We head east, along the southern coast to the unique Jökulsárlon Glacier lagoon. The lagoon was formed around 60 years ago by the continuing process of calving and falling icebergs from the glacier tongue Breiðamerkurjökull. These icebergs are seen in two shades, one type in milky white, while the other type appears in a bright blue colour, which is caused by interplay of light and ice crystals. The lagoon is filled with fish that drift in from the sea along with the tides. Seals gather in large numbers at the mouth of the lagoon to catch the fish during the winter, which is a memorable sight.

On the way back to Vík we also visit Skaftafell national park, which is part of Vatnajökull national park and contains some of the most prized natural sights of the country.

Day 3

  • Jökulsárlon Glacier Lagoon
  • Skaftafell national park

Volcanoes, waterfalls and the Blue Lagoon

Driving along the southern coast we encounter highlights such as the waterfalls Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss, as well as the glaciers and volcanos of Myrdalsjökull/Katla and Eyjafjallajökull. We will visit the Eyjafjallajökull Visitor Center at the foot of the volcano. A short film (20 min) portrays the spectacular natural event in 2010 when this volcano caused the famous ash cloud, and the hectic times and incredible challenges met by the family farm of Thorvaldseyri at the time.

The final highlight before getting back to Reykjavík is the spectacular Blue Lagoon. You have a choice of viewing the lagoon or enjoy soaking in the mineral rich water with its fine silica mud, while you look for the Northern Lights overhead. In the late afternoon we arrive in Reykjavík, where we will stay in Centerhotel Plaza.
